Welcome to Part 5 of our Founders Series, in which we switch it up and ask DCTech founders a bunch of fun, random questions, beginning with:
What do your parents think you do for a living?
Mom: He works in politics. Dad: He has a startup making legislation easier to understand. (More entertaining: My sister works in PR doing social media. My mom’s answer to what she does is probably “Facebook.”)
- Aneet Makin, LegCyte
Answer a ton of emails and attend meetings. When I am home visiting they see me on the laptop all day, but they just think I am emailing. Which I usually am, but they don’t see the business dev side of all the presentations and proposals and talks that have to be done to launch a startup.
- Crystal Plew, Amazi
I’m currently in school so that’s what I’m doing for a “living.” I think they have a pretty good understanding of what’s going on.
- Mayank Jain, Pilot
My parents know exactly what I’m doing. Without their support there is no way EasyPaint would have made the progress it has. A lot of parents want to know their children are on the path to becoming a doctor or lawyer, but we’re an entrepreneurial family. My parents understand that entrepreneurship is right for me, and so they never questioned my path.
- Marty Cornish, EasyPaint
Something with online dating. They’re just happy to know that I’m making money and have good health insurance.
- Erika Ettin, A Little Nudge
They haven’t a clue. I’ve explained it, several times, but I think they are just now starting to understand that we are more than a yoga class in an office setting. I do still believe that they are still scratching their heads on why the heck I would leave the corporate world for a harebrained idea. (Not that I haven’t ever asked myself that as well).
- Emily York, Sade Wellness
They think just blogging and tweeting all day for a hobby. They have know idea what I am really doing!
- LaToria Brent, NextBrides
They think I have something to do with the internet, but they’re not too familiar with it. They loosely get the concept of GoodShuffle, but they cannot understand why anyone would choose to borrow from a neighbor over owning an item outright. We chalk it up to a generational difference and to the recent reinvigoration of online/offline communities. But we can’t wait for them to visit this winter and stay in an AirBnB condo: mind blown.
- Erik Dreyer, GoodShuffle
